EN 388

  • EN 388: 1232X

EN 388 is a European regulation governing the sale of gloves used for safety and protection. It determines the gloves' performance when used for protection against mechanical machinery by measuring the fabric's abrasion, cut, tear and puncture resistance.

The EN 388 cut resistance test uses a single sharp implement to repeatedly pressure a glove in order to determine the amount of force required to cause visible and functional damage.

Suitable Applications and Environments for Polyflex Safety Gloves

Polyco Hot Glove Heat Resistant Gloves have incredible contact heat resistance and durable foundation fabric which makes them suitable for a range of hazardous professions. Please view the list below for a few examples:

Contact Heat Resistant Fabric

The Polyco Heat Safety Gloves are resistant to heated material and tools with a temperature not exceeding 250°C for an incredible fifteen seconds. This makes them perfect for foundry work, barbeques, oven removal and automotive application as it allows the user to safely transfer, put down and deconstruct highly volatile material without worrying about burns and heat penetration.

Contact Heat Safety Gloves

Nitrile Dotted Palm for Grip Enhancement

In order to safely handle and transfer material, you need to know that your glove provides the necessary grip stability required to do the job. Unlike other smoother safety glove designs, the Polyco Heat Safety Glove use a raised and dotted pattern at the palm to enhance the grip stability of the user.

Polyflex Grip Safety Gloves

Comfortable and Soft Knitted Wrist Cuff

A flexible wrist cuff is vital when you're wearing gloves for long periods and especially if your work or application involves manual handling. Fatigue, repetitive strain injury and tired wrists can come on quickly if your wrist isn't correctly supported, or if it isn't allowed to flex and move naturally.

Polyco Heat Safe Gloves cradle the wrist, allowing it to move and bend freely. This knitted wrist cuff sits snugly against the wrist, which also prevents dirt and debris from entering the glove.

Nitrile Coating Benefits

Nitrile is an incredibly flexible coating that provides additional resistance to oil, fuel and chemicals. Nitrile is used as a protective coating in gloves because it matches the pliability of latex with the hazard and injury protection properties of a heavier, woven glove.

Ambidextrous Design

Polyco Hot Gloves is ambidextrous, meaning it can be used on either the left or right hand. No more worrying about which glove fits which hand.

Simply grab them, put them on and go about your business.

Double the Cotton Double the Protection

Polyco Heat Resistant Safety Gloves come complete with a double cotton design which enhances comfort and improves durability and shelf life. Granting additional resistance to scrapes, scratches and bumps, this double layered design bolsters the amount of wear and tear that a glove can take when used day-to-day.

Washing Instructions

Polyco Hot Gloves should not be machine washed. Doing so can cause shrinkage and damage to your gloves.

If washing is required, we recommend washing away any debris or dirt with a damp rag before cleaning the rest of the glove using warm water and a cloth.

What is EN 388?

What is EN 388?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 388. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 388. EN 388 stands for Mechanical Resistance, and informs you of your gloves' resistance to abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures.

How Do I Read the EN 388 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score that this product achieves, the better the product will be at resisting that hazard. Products will score between Level 0 and Level 4 for abrasion, tears and punctures, and if they weren’t tested for that hazard you will see N/A written instead of a number.

Cuts are a little different and, with the EN 388 standard rewritten in 2016, it means that gloves will either be tested to cut resistance or ISO cut resistance (sometimes called TDM cut resistance). Gloves tested to cut resistance will score between Level 0 and Level 5, and gloves tested to ISO cut resistance will achieve a score between Level A and Level F with the higher letter offering better cut protection.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 388 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 388 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.

Great Gloves

Use these at home, the extra length protects wrists and forearms, preventing those little burns you get from the corners of baking trays using shorter gloves.
Dexterity of gloves is very good also.

Response:

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Polyco Hot Gloves are indeed rated and accredited as having level 2 protection under EN 407. This allows the user to handle material of a temperature not exceeding 250°C for up to fifteen seconds.

As stated in our listing under our "Main Features" section: "Contact heat resistant to temperatures up to 250°C for fifteen seconds"

We hope this helps clear things up for you.

Kind regards,

Seth at SafetyGloves.co.uk

These gloves are an excellent addition to my kitchen accessories so much better than the mittens I used to have. I can now grip my roasting tins, and casserole dishes so much easier than before, making it so much safer for me.

Postage a bit high for a small item. Realise you have to have a standard charge. However, would have liked to have paid less!
