What are Needlestick Resistant Gloves?
Needlestick resistant gloves are gloves which are designed to resist against needlestick injury ideal for people dealing with medical waste, people who are giving searches and police officers. Handling needles is an important aspect of many jobs, however doing so is incredibly dangerous. Even if the needle has never been used, there is still a very high chance of accidentally piercing skin and causing a cut or a bleed if the proper protection is not worn.
And if the needle has been used, then the risk is even bigger. Blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis or even HIV can be passed on through used needles and the germs that gather on them pose a big risk of infection developing.
Who Should Wear Needlestick Resistant Gloves?
Basically, any person who would handle hypodermic needles should wear needlestick resistant gloves. For example, anyone working in waste disposal should wear needlestick resistant gloves; needles are often found in rubbish, and because of the high chance of harmful bacteria being present in such environments an infection is almost certain.
Police who are working with drugs, either on a cleanup operation or on a drugs raid should wear needlestick resistant gloves. Needles used for heroin and other such drugs are often shared and can carry several diseases at once. As a result, needlestick resistant gloves are a necessity in this line of work.
Orderlies in hospitals should also wear needlestick resistant gloves. Because of the frequency with which they are used in hospitals, orderlies frequently have to handle and dispose of used needles. Given how many of these needles are used on the sick and ill, getting jabbed with one is an incredibly dangerous thing. By wearing needlestick resistant gloves you can greatly reduce the chance of being infected with a disease or virus.
How Do Needlestick Resistant Gloves Work?
Because there are such a huge variety of needlestick resistant gloves, different gloves work in different ways. In some gloves, the fibres are so close-knit and so tough that it is much harder for sharp objects to pierce or cut the fabric.
In other needlestick resistant gloves, the gloves feature one or more layer with a steel or other metal overlay which helps to stop the needle from penetrating the glove and reaching the skin. Many gloves also have a tough leather layer on top for extra resistance.
Some gloves have an extra long cuff or sleeve, which is designed for people who need to reach far into something which may contain hypodermic needles, such as a person working in recycling or waste disposal.
